Correctional Professionals: Misconduct and Responses

Grasping the various individual, organizational, and societal explanations for misconduct create an awareness of the challenges criminal justice practitioners face.  Recognizing the responses to misconduct and corruption creates an appreciation for the level of accountability that exists in the industry and its ability to maintain the public trust.

After completing this lesson, you should be able to:

  • Describe types of misconduct by correctional officers, including the typology of misconduct by Souryal and McCarthy
  • Describe types of misconduct by community corrections professionals
  • Explain the Zimbardo experiment and what it might imply for correctional professionals
  • Provide explanations for misconduct
  • Present some suggestions to decrease misconduct by correctional professionals

Explanations for correctional misconduct can be described as individual, institutional (or organizational), and systemic. Select one and define and explain it to your peers. Include a recent national incident to illustrate your selection, and provide a link to the incident in your post. Provide feedback to at least two of your peers’ postings.
